About the project
The aim of the project is to create an image and video intelligence platform: an artificial intelligence cloud service (Artificial Intelligence as a Service – AIaaS) that lets anyone build image- and video-based AI applications through a web interface. This makes AI available for exploiting image and video data assets to companies that lack the expertise and resources to fund AI-based development. It requires an intuitive user interface and well-guided workflows that lead the user through the steps of building an AI application on a graphical interface, while being configurable enough for the service to be universally usable.
In addition, as an application model of the AIaaS cloud service, the project develops a teleradiology cloud service that enables automatic, AI-based quality control of MRI scans – and later of other diagnostic images – and can serve as a framework for developing further diagnosis-support AI applications. The planned automatic quality control makes it possible to filter out, right after the examination, the 15–30% of MRI scans (Esteban et al., 2017) that are unsuitable for a diagnosis. The scan can then be repeated on the spot without delay, avoiding a new repeat examination. This significantly reduces the burden on patients and their waiting time, as well as the costs of the institutions providing radiology services. It also substantially increases the efficiency of teleradiology services and, as it provides objective information on the quality and reliability indicators of examinations, can play an important role in setting up and deciding on treatment strategies.
In the project, the consortium leader Starschema Kft. is responsible for developing the efficient and well-scalable cloud platform and the background processes running on it (backend), while BlackBelt Kft. is responsible for the intuitive user interface and user management (frontend). The research and development of the AI algorithm behind the first model service on the platform takes place at the Brain Imaging Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The AIaaS created in the project could play a key, gap-filling role in the spread of AI-based innovation and corporate product development in Hungary and in effectively exploiting the epoch-making economic potential of AI.
